As the Partnerships Leader at Vygo, a company that partners with institutions to support student success, I have seen firsthand the importance of developing and implementing promising programs and practices for first-generation college students.

First-generation college students face unique challenges that can make navigating college difficult. These students often come from families with limited experience in higher education and may lack other students' resources and support. But with the right support and resources, first-gen students can thrive in college and beyond.

At Vygo, we have partnered with institutions to develop and implement programs and practices that address the specific needs of first-gen students. For example, we have worked with institutions to develop mentorship programs that connect first-gen students with mentors who can provide guidance and support throughout their college journey.

Through our partnerships, we developed and worked with universities that have created programs which connect first-year and second-year students with peer mentors who have successfully navigated the challenges of being a first-gen student. The mentors guide and support everything from time management and study skills to navigating campus resources and finding internships.

We have also worked with institutions to develop early intervention programs that identify first-gen students who may be struggling and provide targeted support to help them stay on track. For example, we have partnered with Universities to use data from Vygo to identify students who may be at risk of dropping out and provides targeted interventions to help them succeed.

In addition to these programs, we have also seen many institutions develop financial aid and support programs, academic support programs, and community-building programs that help first-gen students feel supported and connected to their institution.

Through our work with institutions, we have seen the positive impact that these programs and practices can have on first-gen students. By providing targeted support and resources, institutions can help first-gen students overcome the unique challenges they face and succeed in college and beyond.

In conclusion, developing and implementing promising programs and practices for first-gen students is crucial to supporting their success. By partnering with institutions to develop mentorship programs, early intervention programs, and other targeted support programs, we can help first-gen students thrive in college and beyond.
